Keeping Ahead of Developments in Printing and Packaging
Whether you are new to the world of print and packaging or a seasoned veteran, you’ll want to make sure you keep an eye on the latest print or packaging industry news.
Keeping your finger on the industry’s pulse helps you spot new trends as they emerge, keep you on top of new developments and best practices, and even spot new opportunities for professional development.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the print industry has continued to produce magazines and trade publications in physical print, so keeping up with printing news is more accessible than many industries. In this blog, we will look at some of the top publications in printing and packaging while also examining their online presence, a rich source of free information, news and best practice.
While the printing and packaging industry covers a vast range of specialist sectors, a few websites are essential to keep on your weekly reading lists. Here are the websites and magazines we recommend for print and packaging news:
Printweek – www.printweek.com
The king of print news media in the UK, Printweek has been informing UK print specialists on what’s new since 1958. Now published as a fortnightly magazine, Printweek also has a formidable online presence. If you are looking to keep up to date with just about anything from the UK print industry – from equipment news to business best practices – Printweek should be your first port of call.
With an extensive and regularly updated news section covering various sectors, including labels and packaging, wide-format and print buying, Printweek is a must when looking to keep ahead of the game. As well as industry news, Printweek also has an extensive knowledge bank containing in-depth features and interviews from across the entire print spectrum.
Similar in nature but containing a more comprehensive range of insights and opinions, Printweek’s community section offers profiles, Q&As and thought leadership pieces from key players within the print industry. Printweek also helps you keep track of events, workshops and expos from across the print industry and regularly runs its own webinars to keep you up-to-date on trending topics and industry developments.
If you are a subscriber to the printed version of Printweek you will also get access to a digital version of their ‘Top 500’ report. Containing current and historical data across a whole range of metrics, Printweeks Top 500 is a great way to benchmark your print company against others in your sector. As Printweek explains, “not only can you sort the ranking by any one of the 22 metrics we feature, but you can also create your own ranking, based on your own selection of peers, or, if your business isn’t featured, add your own details to see how you measure up against the print industry’s Top 500.” This makes Printweek’s Top 500 a powerful tool and a great bonus for anyone thinking of subscribing to the physical publication.
Finally, if you are looking for a new role within printing, Printweek has one of the best jobs sections in the industry. Supported by well-known print companies, smaller niche printers and recruitment agencies alike, Printweek jobs is a good place to be as either a recruiter or a job seeker.
Packaging News – www.packagingnews.co.uk
With a magazine with over 10,000 readers every month and a website that reaches more than 40,000 packaging professionals monthly, Packaging News is one of the most well-known and trusted sources of news, insight and opinion in the packaging industry.
Packaging News covers a range of packaging sectors from cosmetics to food and luxury packaging. It deals with all the standard materials you would expect, such as glass, flexible plastic and cartonboard. The Packing News website contains news articles, best practices and insights from across the packaging industry, including innovation, sustainability and regulations, industry news, and reviews.
In addition to their regularly updated news section, Packaging News website also hosts its own ‘TV channel’, giving you easy access to all of Packing News’ video content, including interviews, comment and event coverage. Suppose you are looking for something a bit more in-depth. In that case, Packaging News again has this covered, providing comprehensive buying guides on a range of machinery as well as compiling white papers and research looking into industry trends and developments.
Packaging News boasts the “most extensive classifieds marketplace in the industry with jobs, services, materials and equipment,” and, if you are looking to raise the profile of your packaging business, having a platform that’s regularly viewed by industry decision-makers could really help boost your profile.
Like Printweek, Packaging news also features a jobs section. Packaging News Jobs brings together the latest opportunities from companies and recruiters across the UK packaging industry. The jobs site allows you to search by type of role, job title and also by company. It also contains a news section to keep abreast of the comings and goings within your chosen sector.
British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) – www.britishprint.com
Many of you will already be familiar with the BPIF as a best-in-class trade association within the UK print industry. Still, you may not realise that their website is also an excellent source of free industry news, insights and events, whether you are a BPIF member or not.
You will already get access to their superb member benefits and specialist services if you are a member. But, even as a non-member, you can access some of their in-house industry research (like their facts and figures report) and their collated industry research.
As well as their in-depth research, the BPIF website also collates news articles from across the UK print industry. All of which can be filtered by category to find the news applicable to your business sector and a keyword search function to find those sector-specific terms.
While BPIF doesn’t have its own jobs page, it does feature a list of print companies and suppliers, advice on training and professional development courses suitable for you and your team. It also has an easily searchable Events section containing webinars, events, and workshops taking place in the UK each month.
So, whether you are a BPIF member or not, don’t discount their website when looking to keep on top of what’s happening in the world of print.
Digital Printer – www.digitalprintermag.co.uk
We are going a bit more specialist with our final recommendation; Digital Printer magazine is the UK’s only specialist magazine devoted to commercial digital print. Digital Printer’s website is a valuable source of industry information, from equipment and technology to business strategy and how printers can incorporate digital print into their processes.
Digital Printer’s new section covers the whole gamut of digital printing and comes complete with advanced filters to ensure you can find relevant topics quickly. You can filter by a core area or further refine your search further to specific topics, such as wide-format or textile printing. It also allows you to view news across the world or country by country.
In addition to its news hub, Digital Printer’s website also contains a whole host of articles on industry trends and developments and thought-leadership blogs from industry specialists across the digital printing sphere.
Like Packaging News, Digital Printer also post videos on their website. However, unlike Packaging News, these are usually partner videos showcasing new digital printing technologies and methods. Although not original content, these videos are good for getting a quick snapshot of new technology, along with video case studies and workflows.
It’s worth noting that Digital Printer is part of Whitmar Publications, so it’s also easy to access their other publications (Digital Labels and Packaging and FlexoTech Magazine) from the Digital Printer Website. Whitmar Publications is also the owners of Ozzle Jobs, which many of you will know as one of the top places for print and packaging people to find new roles. You can link right through to Ozzle from the main navigation of Digital Printer’s website.
